My name is Renae Huffman and I am a Co-President of Growing Together. I have three children attending Gompers Elementary and one child at Black Hawk Middle School. In 2010 while at a Gompers PTO meeting we were discussing the unsafe and dire playgrounds and deciding what next steps we could take to make a change for our kids. I actually played on the same equipment when I attended both schools as well. Maybe you did too? As a result of that meeting, Growing Together began to address the concerns over the fading Northside community culture, lack of play, and the under appreciation of our environment.
The mission of Growing Together is to create an interactive outdoor space that will cultivate community relationships by encouraging awareness and appreciation of our environment, promote safe, inclusive, physical activities, and instill a love for learning across generations of the Northside communities of Madison, Wisconsin.
Growing Together has 5 phases:
1) Fiskars School and Community Garden – installed in May 2011
2) Gompers School and Community Playground – installed August 21, 2012
3) Gompers, Black Hawk, and Community Playground – installation May 9, 2015
4) Growing Together Community Walking Trail –
5) Update sports fields –
With this blog we will share our ongoing journey; the importance of play, collaborating with our community, partnering with other businesses, how working together can truly improve our community and enhance learning for our kids. Our goal is to have various blog writers and even to incorporate student entries in the future.
Our 100% volunteer committee of dedicated parents, teachers, children, and community and business leaders are eagerly working to reach our financial goals by hosting various fundraisers, writing grants, actively reaching out to business leaders and community foundations and building financial partnerships. Have you ever thought about volunteering or getting involved? There are opportunities to fit every parent’s schedule; whether you work outside of the home or are a stay-at-home parent.
